Glenfield Scout Activity Centre was buzzing with excitement over the weekend of October 19-20, as over 300 participants joined the Humeoree event, participating simultaneously in the global Jamboree on the Air (JOTA). Organized by the Hume Region Scout Fellowship, the event offered Scouts and Leaders the chance to connect with others across the world using multiple forms of amateur radio technology.
The JOTA base was a hub of activity, featuring numerous HF (High Frequency) audio and digital radio stations, digital amateur radio modes, and local VHF and UHF repeater contacts. Scouts were able to experience the thrill of making contacts both near and far, learning valuable radio communication skills and making friendships across borders.
Every participant who took part in the JOTA base received their JOTA Badge, proudly provided by the Fellowship. This special badge symbolizes their involvement in the worldwide Scout radio event and serves as a reminder of the exciting new connections made during the weekend.
Adding to the excitement, the event also saw the successful completion of 13 Amateur Radio Certificate exams and practical assessments, involving 3 adults and 10 youth members of all ages. The achievements of these aspiring radio operators reflect the growing interest in amateur radio within the Scouting community, and their newfound skills will continue to foster communication in future events.
Looking ahead, the Hume Region Scout Fellowship is already making plans for the 2025 JOTA event, which will be held again at the Glenfield Scout Activity Centre. With a successful weekend behind them, excitement is building for next year’s global Scout communications event.
